I remember a cold winter's day about 43 years ago...maybe not as cold as today though. I was at Mr. Drewes "Broadway Hobbies" after work on a late Friday afternoon when I & a couple of other guys decided we would head to GM Raceway (now Magnatech) in San Antonio for some Gp.27 racing. We had no cell phones then to call ahead & it was only a four to five hour drive from Pasadena, so off we went. I had an old Chrysler product back then w/ bald tires. That shouldn't be a problem though as it was only cloudy until we got out of Katy (that was where you could see the rice silos then) & it began to drizzle. It was pretty windy & it wasn't exactly warm inside as my heater didn't work well but on we went anticipating racing the San Antonio crew on Jim's 100' American Orange. When I finally got to downtown San Antonio where I-10 trickled down to a 2 lane crawl, it was as slick as glass in the underpass with fender benders everywhere as I threaded though them. Soon we were on the far west side of San Antonio (not many miles from where Jim is now) & dragging out our boxes & heading in. Only Jim was there & I guess his heat didn't work as it was about 55 degrees inside I remember guessing. They raced on Saturday night & Jim was the only one there. Wow...well, Jim let us run for free & I remember putting some glue down & the car came to the turn & stopped when I hit the glue...the Camen Brown was thicker then & there was no such thing as Koford glue. We messed around & decided it wasn't much fun in the cold conditions so we headed home. Now it was raining but going back through downtown San Antonio is easier (then & now) & I thought it would be okay. Well... I was wrong. After we got outside the city, traffic was very, very light but in the steady rain my car was hydroplaning constantly. I would watch the rear view mirror as much as I could & when I didn't see the tire tracks, I'd gently let off the gas & then the car would shake a little & when the tire tracks reappeared, I'd accelerate oh so gently. I did this for hours going no faster than 60 mph all the way back until we were in Houston again.
Seven years ago as of late last night, when I moved into West Oaks Mall on a warm New Years Eve, it was an easy move compared to many as the last Katy location was only about 15 minutes away. I had Shelby & other folks helping again & when it turned from 2010 to the New Year @ midnight, a cold front had moved in & short sleeves weren't the hot tip anymore. Over the next several weeks in setting up the new shop, it was cold. I remember as the thermostat said 57 degrees one night & the Mall folks hadn't shown me how to turn on the heat that uses a light sensor. The thermostat isn't working properly now & it says 58 degrees this cold afternoon in the 'heat of the day'.
In what seems a lifetime ago, here at what's been mostly a mostly failed location, it's a New Year again where it's mighty cold inside as the Mall Entrance door has been broken for almost 3 weeks. I can't afford to run the heat & don't think it makes much sense anyway with the Mall's Entrance sliding doors open. Strangely enough on this cold Monday, the frozen Yogurt place is the only other business open in my corridor. Oh well, my lease is up @ the end of February. 'Let him who has ears hear.'
