The "Spring Shootout" at Charlie's Garage was in a word, AWESOME! The day began with 6 out of town racers waiting on the doors to be opened so they could get to practicing. LMP practiced first and the track was full or close to it most of the time. Tech opened at 1:15 by 1:30 all the cars were teched and the Concours event was taking place. Susan and Charlie Murray were the judges and picked the Stars and Stripes LMP of Don Linick from Orlando Florida as the winner. Randy Auwarter's car was runner up with Keith Auwarter claiming 3rd. Qualifying began after Concours and it was a show as Chuck Hendricks went out first and set a time of 2.38 seconds right out of the gate. Terry Jensen was closest at 2.41 and then Lee Shirley took his turn as the last to qualify. Lee roared around the track with a time of 2.39 good enough to qualify 2nd. Chuck and Lee are the only drivers to ever qualify under 2.4 seconds. After qualifying the racers were divided into 2 heats with the odd number qualifiers in heat one and the even in heat two.

Chuck grabbed the lead in rotation one and never gave it back. Scott ran 2nd, Terry 3rd, Randy 4th, Larry 5th, and John 6th. After 2 rounds Terry move to 2nd with Scott 3rd, Randy 4th, John 5th, and Larry 6th. John and Randy swapped 3rd and 4th in round 3. During the 4th rotation Scott and Larry suffered a DNF and were out. Chuck continued to lead with Terry 2nd, John 3rd, and Randy 4th. The last rotation showed Chuck 1st, Terry 2nd, John 3rd, and Randy 4th but on the same lap as John. 3 drivers finishing Heat one set personal bests with Chuck establishing a new track record of 366 laps.
Heat 2 was led by Lee with Keith 2nd, Bud 3rd, Don 4th, David 5th, and Bill 6th. Bill suffered car issues after only 11 laps but would return later in the race. After 2 rounds Lee led with Bud now 2nd, Don 3rd, Keith 4th and David 5th. Keith passed Don for 3rd in round 3 as Bill made his return to the track. Bud took the top spot after 4 rounds as Lee had motor failure and suffered a DNF. Keith took over 2nd with David 3rd, Don 4th, and Bill back in at 5th. Round 5 had Don suffering a DNF as his motor became dislodged following a hard wreck. There were no changes until round 7 when Bill overtook David for 3rd. At the finish Bud took the win in Heat 2 but more important was that he finished 2 feet ahead of where John finished in Heat 1 giving Bud 3rd place over all and bragging rights all the way back to Mobile.

Flexi Wing Car Concours was next with Keith Auwarter taking 1st, Randy Auwarter 2nd, and John Clow 3rd. Keith painted two cars on the Concours podium in LMP and two more on the Flexi Wing Car Concours podium. Qualifying was next and it was close.

Randy pulled ahead in heat 1 after one rotation with Larry 2nd, Scott 3rd, Bud 4th, and Bill 5th. After 2 rounds Randy led with Bud now 2nd, Larry 3rd, Bill 4th, Scott 5th with car issues, and Taylor not starting this round with car issues to be fixed. After 3 rounds Larry moved to 2nd, Scott 3rd, Bill with gear issues 4th, Bud 5th after a bent axle put him out with a DNF, and Taylor 6th. Nothing changed until round 7 when Scott along with Larry suffered a DNF. At the finish the order was Randy 1st, Bill 2nd, Larry 3rd, Scott 4th, Taylor 5th, and Bud 6th and a DNF.
In Heat 2 Keith opened an early lead with Chuck 2nd, Terry 3rd, Don 4th, and John 5th. In round 2 John pulled ahead of Don for 4th. Chuck took the lead in round 3 with Keith 2nd. Keith regained the lead in round 5 when Chuck crashed under the bridge and was forced to try and fix his guide flag. In round 5 Chuck was late getting his car back running after attempting to fix it and John suffered a DNF. After 6 rounds Keith was leading Terry in 2nd, Don in 3rd, and Chuck held 4th but was forced to retire due to the guide flag. At the finish it was Keith 1st, Terry 2nd, and Don 3rd.

Finally awards were given out and as a bonus prizes were given out to all the racers that stayed and did not win a plaque. We were just telling Taylor Dorris that her motor had slowed and needed to be replaced and her entry number was chosen for the first handout and it was a new Intimidator motor.
