The force was not with us today at Charlie's Garage. We didn't have enough to race so those of us that were there did a lot of tuning and testing. Since I had my top LMP cars ready for the "Spring Shootout" on April 17, I worked on wing cars that will race after the LMP at the "Spring Shootout". The lap times of my cars were competitive but not at the front of the field. I did find out which body works best for my fastest flexi wing car. The Auwarter brothers seem to have the speed edge in the Flexi Wing Car class. Keith Auwarter pushed his and his brother's car to the low 2.3's while I barely eeked out a 2.39.
Keith and I worked on our vintage wire chassis wing cars that will run in a special race in May. Once again the Auwarter's cars were a little faster than mine. I got a 2.08 fast lap while Keith ran a 2.03 with his car and a 1.98 with Randy's car. However it was my first attempt with a new tire, gear. and motor set up. Hopefully I can get it faster in the coming weeks. These cars are using our Group F rules with the exception of the wire chassis only rule and the legal use of rear axle bearings.
Lee Shirley was there and worked on his LMP cars mostly though he did run his flexi wing car to make sure it was race ready. Lee discovered that his "A" car handled sweeter than his "B" car though the "B" car seemed to have a straight line speed advantage. Lee said he was racing the "A" car next week. Both of his cars are built on the JK C43 chassis with steel pans. Keith practiced with his LMP and finally put his Outisight Stealth 501 body on it and recorded some of his fastest and most consistent lap times using the Mossetti Avenger chassis with steel pans. If you are wondering why we are running steel pans rather than the lightweight aluminum ones, it is because of the rule we implemented trying to make our other legal motors competitive with the Intimidator by forcing the Intimidator powered cars to have steel pans and weigh no less than 88 grams while the other motors can use aluminum pans and some of them are close to 70 grams. The extra weight hasn't worked as the fast cars are all running the Intimidator and weigh over 88 grams.
Thursday night, April 15, is your last chance to sort out your LMP and Flexi Wing Cars before the "Spring Shootout" on April 17. I will be there trying to get more speed (means trying to catch the Auwarters) from my Flexi Wing cars. The track still seems a little slower than the last time we cleaned and glued it. Of course it could be my cars are slower but either way if anyone thinks they are going to win the big one it is going to be a war with all the great racers that will be here.
Drivers, squeeze your triggers!
