LMP
PA Watson TQ’ed at 5.2 which, if we were keeping up with such a thing these days, is certainly an LMP track record. He was also .3 faster than the day’s second fastest qualifier, Kurt Geissler. Having served notice, PA then ran away and hid from the rest of us in the crash-and-burn LMP 2020 finale. There was at least some excitement in the pack as Jerry Straznicky took second by five laps over Brandon Schlicht, who was only one lap up on Kurt. All of those guys had come over from Houston, while Charles Campa and I unfortunately didn’t defend San Antonio’s honor all that well. Fred Schlicht DNF’ed.
TQ: PA Watson…5.200
Results (Racer…laps…fast lap):
1. PA Watson…233…5.395
2. Jerry Straznicky…199…5.920
3. Brandon Schlicht…194…5.788
4. Kurt Geissler…193…5.445
5. Charles Campa…188…6.567
6. Scott Taylor…183…5.778
7. Fred Schlicht…31…6.725
GTP
PA was TQ again in GTP but this time it was a little closer as the next three qualifiers were all within .11 of him. However, in the race—another crash-and-burn affair—PA’s qualifying effort was for naught as his car’s handling went away, putting him into an early hole. Kurt, Jerry, and I were pretty close until the last couple of heats when trouble caught up with them and I managed to pull out the win. Kurt edged Jerry for second by less than half a lap.
Special mention goes to Charles Campa who raced a 1980’s Jim Honeycutt brass and wire wing car chassis—I think it was a Group 15—beneath a Rogue GTP body. It was a rocket on the straights and a handful in the turns, but it was cool to have such an old chassis showing life on the track.
TQ: PA Watson…5.131
Results (Racer…laps…fast lap):
Scott Taylor…229…5.339
Kurt Geissler…215…5.314
Jerry Straznicky…215…5.366
PA Watson…186…5.148
Charles Campa…161…6.382
